Gender representation in advertising


1) Find three adverts featuring women that are from the 1950s or 1960s.Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post. Hint: You may wish to look at car, perfume or cleaning products but can use any product you wish.






2) Find three adverts featuring women that are from post-2000. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post.








3) What stereotypes of women can you find in the 1950s and 1960s adverts? Give specific examples. 
  • One stereotype is women should stay at home and become housewives.
  • Another stereotype is women should do their job as a mother.
  • Another stereotype is women should prepare the house for their husbands to come back from work. 
  • Another stereotype is women should enjoy doing housework.
4) What stereotypes of women can you find in the post-2000s adverts? Give specific examples.
  • That women are strong individuals 
  • Don't need to rely on men
  • Instead of a man being there for the fragrance advert, a woman is being shown
5) How do your chosen adverts suggest representations of gender have changed over the last 60 years? 

The chosen adverts show how representations of gender as changed over the last 50 years as in 1950s and 1960s they are more reliant on men whereas in the 2000s they can rely on themselves. In the 2000s adverts, women are shown as powerful and strong whereas in the 1950s adverts they are shown fragile. Moreover, women are also shown with more independence.
