Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things analysis

 Lighting

Denotation - Lights kept flashing on and off. The lights in the beginning were also quite gloomy. There was also red lights.

Connotation - By making the lights flash on and off and making it gloomy creates a eerie tone. There were also flashing red lights which shows there is emergency and something terrible has happened. This also makes the audience think something terrifying is about to happen. 

Analysis -  By making lights flash on and off, it makes the audience feel terrified and worried for the character. The red flashing lights suggests that it is a emergency and something dangerous might've happened as the colour red represents danger. Making the lights gloomy creates a dark atmosphere too.

Actors placement and movement

Denotation - The character opened the door very aggressively and was running as fast as he could. He also kept pushing the buttons on the elevator.

Connotation - The character running as fast as he could suggests that something could be chasing him or he is running away from something. The aggressive button pressing conveys how panic-stricken he is. Moreover, it also conveys how terrifying the creature might be as he doesn't stop pressing the buttons. 

Analysis - By making his movement aggressive, it makes the audience feel terrified as the character is doing everything as fast as they can. Furthermore, it creates suspense as we don't know what he is running away from. This also makes the audience to watch more as they probably want to know what he is sprinting away from.

Setting

Denotation - A kid is cycling alone through a forest and a monster is following him. It is dark and foggy. There is a house in the middles of the woods.

Connotation - The boy cycling alone in the forest at night, creates a sinister atmosphere as traveling alone in the woods at night can be terrifying. The dark and fog also illustrates something horrific is about to happen. 

Analysis - This bit of the opening creates a unnatural and sinister tone as traveling alone in the woods at night makes you vulnerable to anything. The use of dark colours also represents the strangeness of the area and dangers. So this might make the audience think what other mysteries the forest might hold.
