Advertising: Key conventions

1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

Slogan - This imperative suggests how popular it is and how everyone is eating skittles. Furthermore, the word 'rainbow' suggests how flavourful skittles are and how skittles bring happiness.

Image of product - The skittles are shown at the centre of the advert showing the audience what they need to buy. Moreover, the skittles are creating a rainbow which further support the idea of skittles bringing happiness.

Colour scheme/Setting - The setting of clouds suggests peace and joy. This makes the audience think that skittles bring peace to you and make you feel joyful. The use of red too makes us desire skittles.

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?

The USP for skittles may be the slogan of the product "Taste the rainbow". This is because the slogan may catch people's attention. The USP might also be the different flavours. This is because the different flavours might make people want to buy it to try to find out the best flavour. It uses an imperative by saying 'TASTE'
